The futon originated in Japan and was a padded mattress that was laid on the floor for sleeping but could be folded away during the day. This allowed the room to be used for other purposes than just as sleeping quarters.

More recently in the western world the term has come to be used to describe a bed which can then be folded up into a sofa or chair during the day. It is usually made with a wooden or metal frame. Typically, the frame folds in the middle, allowing the futon to be used as a couch, and flattens for use as a bed.

It is usually filled with foam as well as battening, often in several layers, and is often much thicker and larger than Japanese futons, resembling a traditional mattress in size. Western-style futons are an inexpensive alternative to a bed or other furniture, and are often sold in sets that include the mattress and frame. Futons normally feature a removable and replaceable cover, lending them more versatility.

Futon Mattress- Your first consideration when looking for a futon is to consider the type of mattress that you want. Your main options are cotton or foam or a combination. If your futon is going to be used primarily as a bed then you should go for a thicker futon mattress. However, if the intention is to just have it as an emergency backup bed for unexpected visitors then you could probably get away with a thinner mattress and thus saving money.

If you intend to be using it both a couch and a bed this means that you will be folding and unfolding it on a regular basis. In this case you need a flexible futon mattress such as an inner spring of cotton polyester mattress. Another alternative that you could consider in this case is a foam mattress. It is a good idea to when you buy a futon to also invest in a mattress cover which will help protect the mattress from stains and dirt and will possibly extend the life of your futon mattress.

Before you buy a futon you should check the wall clearance on the frame. Make sure that there is enough room for the futon to fully open in the room you intend to place it. Some futons open flush to the wall whilst others have to be pulled away from the wall before being opened.

From a land known these days for its advancements in modern day technology, there also hails an ancient convenience known for giving one a restful nights sleep. What some may loosely refer to as a one dimensional mattress is a very well designed piece of bedding known as a futon – which in Japanese means bedding. Let’s first look at the origins of this great piece of furniture. In the past, ordinary people in Japan slept on straw mats. While the peasants slept with a rudimentary covering (if any at all), theaffluentwere able to coverthemselveswith more clothing. This eventually led to the making of bedclothes and futons for a more comfortable night’s sleep. That was about 300 years ago, but it is only in the last decade or so that people in the Western world have started using them too.

Typically, a futon set consists of a padded mattress, a quilt and, of course, a pillow. A cover is often included too, but not always. The mattress is placed inside the cover which greatly aids in keeping the entire bedding clean and fresh. The pillow, while not stuffed with feathers or cotton or some other material, is filled with old standby beans and / or buckwheat chaff.Do not let that put you off though! While this type of pillow may not to be a style that everyone likes, because of its firmness and rigidity, it has had its converts. The mattress itself is usually stuffed with cotton or synthetic batting. You may occasionally come across one filled with wool, but they are fairly rare these days. Typically, a mattress is three to five inches in thickness and is designed to be spread out flat on the floor. As people usually perspire during sleep, the futon has been designed to absorb moisture. Surprisingly, you can have a very peaceful sleep, stay warm, and feel a kind of support that you would not get from a traditional bed.

Most people would agree that making the bed is a chore that they could do without, and futons solves just this problem. You can just roll up a futon and put in your closet or in the corner of your room. What was your bedroom then becomes a living room. When the futon is not being used, it can also be hung outside in the sunlight to keep it smelling nice and fresh. If you are someone who often has guests staying the night at your home then a futon is an absolute must-have. When guests come, you can just take the spare futon out of storage and place it on the living room floor for them to sleep on. No more sleeping on sofas or jamming 3 people into a single bed. You could also pack in your car and take it with you if you are planning to visit someone else who is short on beds.

Convertible Sofa Beds – Three Different Styles

When I first think of convertible sofa beds, I think hide-a-beds, really heavy, and those brown patterned sofa beds from the 1980′s – not attractive but still out there in student apartments. A sofa bed serves a great purpose, a couch by day and an extra bed at night for guests when you do not have extra room. So you want comfort and function, not always easy to accomplish. But the industry is always trying, so there are several options on the market of different types of convertible sofa beds.
<p>
Since I grew up during the 1970′s and 1980′s, the first type I think of is like the one I mentioned above: a pull out sofa bed. It looks like a normal couch, but then you remove the cushions and there is a bed that can be pulled out from the bottom of the sofa. The mattress on these is not as thick as a regular mattress, they usually range from 4″ to 6″, and they vary in comfort. They are always more comfortable if they are newer, and more expensive ones tend to have better quality mattresses. I have slept on this type of convertible sofa bed with various results. Some I could hardly move in the morning, and other I woke up feeling like a spring chicken. One really nice thing about this style is that if you use it regularly, you can leave it made up with sheets and blankets. This style most commonly comes in either a full or queen size bed, though you can also get a love seat that has a twin bed inside. You can also get these as part of a sectional.

When we owned a used furniture store, I came across another style of convertible sofa bed that I had completely forgotten about, the click clack style. I am pretty sure that the name comes from the sound that they make when they are converted from sofa to bed: click-clack-click-clack … In this style there is a special type of hinging mechanism that allows the back of the sofa to lie flat. The early style of these have been around for about 60 years, but there are modern versions that are quite innovative. I have seen some, after they are converted into a bed, will have one side (not the back) that hinges up to a 45 degree angle to make more of a chaise lounge style, or that props a person up to more easily watch TV or read. One advantage to these over the pull out bed is that they take up less room to convert from sofa to bed. One challenge for manufacturers is to make the bed feel flat, no bump in the middle where the bottom and back of the sofa meet.

Another style of <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”http://www.convertiblesofabeds.com”>convertible sofa beds</a> that became popular in the 1990′s is the futon, which I believe originated in Japan. They convert the same way as a click clack bed, but typically have an all wood, or wood and metal frame. A “mattress” sits on the frame and bends in the middle when it is set up as a sofa. When you lay the frame flat, you have a bed with a regular, one piece mattress. Futons sometimes get a bad rap for not being comfortable, but only if you get the 0 special from a discount store. Those just don’t last long, they have wimpy frames and only a 4″ mattress. A really good quality futon will have about an 8″ mattress, often with coils like a real mattress. These are quite comfortable for sleeping.
<p>
These are the three main styles of convertible sofa beds, and if you are in the market for one, you will find that they can be quite stylish, very comfortable and come in a variety of materials. Something to suit anybody.

The Evolution of Futon Convertible Sofa Beds

There are many styles of convertible sofa beds available on the market today. They have greatly evolved from the early click-clack beds to pull out hide-a-beds to the Japanese futon and back again to the beginning. All of these styles can still be found, greatly improved upon their early predecessors, being more comfortable and stylish than ever before. But today, lets take a look at the history and evolution of the futon and the revolutionary new styles available.

As you probably know, the traditional futon is from Japan. The original futon was not designed to be folded up into a sofa, but was designed to be folded and put away so that the room could be used for other purposes. The futon was more of a bedding set that had two main parts: the bottom mattress (shikibuton) and the thick quilted bedcover (kakebuton). The mattress is only about 2.0 inches thick and is filled with a cotton or synthetic batting. This makes them easy to fold away and store in a closet. The Japanese futon needs to be regularly aired out in the sun and are often beaten using a special bamboo tool similar to a carpet beater.

I am not sure when the futon was introduced in the US, but I remember first seeing them in the 1980′s. However, the western futon has some major differences from the original. The primary difference is that they are put on a wood or metal frame that folds in the middle, allowing them to be used as convertible sofa beds. During the day they can be folded up in the sofa position, and then they can be flattened out at night to be used as a bed. Almost all of these that I have seen have wooden arm rests.

The next major difference is the mattress. First, it is thicker. A high end futon will have a mattress that is up to six to eight inches thick. A cheap, discount store futon’s mattress is usually only about 4″ thick. Though this is still twice the thickness of the traditional Japanese futon, it is often needed because of the metal frame it rests on. Besides being thicker, the mattresses often have a removable cover for easy washing or replacing. The cheaper mattresses are made of foam and batting. The thick mattresses have multiple layers of foam and batting. Some of the higher quality futon mattresses actually have coils like a real mattress.

The latest evolution in the western futon I had never seen before until today. This type of convertible sofa beds are called a futon, but looks just like a regular sofa. The ones I saw were made by Handy Living and had a really nice microfiber upholstery with full padded arms and throw pillows. You can get them in a full sofa size or the smaller love seat, and in a whole variety of colors to suit any decor. Besides looking like a regular sofa, these convertible sofa beds not only fold flat for sleeping, but also can be partially reclined. They also claim that they easily convert from one position to another, using just a touch of a hand. This sure beats the wood or metal framed futon! We have a fairly nice one, and though laying it flat is not a problem, it is a two person job to get it upright again. One last improvement worth mentioning is that the back and seating area is 10″ thick with coils, so very comfortable – especially since there is no bar in the middle of your back as in the cheap futons!

Yes, the futon has come a long ways in different styles from the traditional Japanese style. So, if you are looking at convertible sofa beds, consider the latest innovative style to see if it would work for you.

The Evolution Of Sofa Beds

Sofa beds have been around for a long time. I am not really sure who the genius was behind the first sofa bed, or when it actually came into being, but I know that they have been around for quite awhile. We owned a used furniture store a few years back, and we had some old click clack sofa beds come into the store that looked like they were from about the 1950′s. I thought that these were pretty cool, the back would lay flat to change the sofa into a bed.

Sometime later, perhaps the late ’60′s, but definitely by the 1970′s, the traditional pull out sofa beds became quite popular. These may have been quite comfortable initially (though I have my doubts), but most of these had thin, 4″ mattresses that did not have a very long life. It was not uncommon to feel a bar in the middle of your back when you had to sleep on one, not very conducive to a good nights sleep.

So, it is not surprising that futons became popular in the 1980′s. When it comes to futons, you can get the cheap, discount version. Functional but not very comfortable since the mattresses are thin and have a short life span. But a good quality futon will last for a long time, having a good quality, thick (and sometimes even an innerspring) mattress.

But, the evolution of the sleeper sofa continues. The new traditional sofa beds on the market today are quite modern and comfortable.

Now, I have a good futon and it has served my family well for several years, but there are some things about it that I do not like as well as a traditional sofa that converts into a bed. Luckily, regular sofa beds have come a long way in the last 20 – 30 years. Don’t get me wrong, I like my futon, but here are some reasons why I would like a traditional sleeper sofa.

My futon looks nice, it has a beautiful hardwood frame and a thick mattress, but it really is better suited for a family room than the living room. A futon is simply more casual looking than a nice microfiber or leather sofa.
The seat part of a futon tips slightly backwards, this is just the nature of the design of a futon. This really is not a big deal, but if you want to lie on the futon when it is set up as a sofa, it is not very comfortable because of the slant. Also, most futons have wood or metal arms, also not the most comfortable to rest your head on while lying down. And in our family during a movie night, someone always claims the couch as a place to lie, not sit on, to enjoy the movie.
The new sofa beds available today are beautiful and trendy, and not only look good but are also comfortable. Some new fashions have also brought back the original click clack style of sofa bed. A good modern sofa bed is also very comfortable to sleep on, many manufacturers have tried to solve the old problem of the bar in the back.
Finally, many modern sofa beds don’t look like a sofa bed, but just like a really nice couch.

Sofa beds, like many other things, have really evolved over time. Though old styles have returned, it is with modern ingenuity and new levels of comfort. So, if you could use a sleeper sofa, but have been tentative about trying the new styles due to old misconceptions, I would encourage you to check out the new sofa beds on the market today, I bet you will be pleased!
