Most sofas seem to dwarf many small rooms with their dimensions, making the room look cramped. Surely it is possible in this day and age for manufacturers to produce sofas with dimensions that are smaller than standard, specially designed to fit into those smaller spaces? There are manufacturers who custom-make sofas to your own dimensions – for a price. However, if you can’t or won’t pay those prices for a smaller-than-usual sofa, where can you find ready-made discount sofas for small spaces? There is, of course, the love seat – a more intimate seating for two people to snuggle up together but that isn’t really a smaller-than-average sofa. Even many two-seater sofas often tend to look too bulky and give the room an overstuffed appearance.

Characteristics to Look For

First and foremost, when you are looking for a discount sofa for small spaces, forget curves. Go for simple lines – clean and straight. Choose legs that have not been hidden under drapes or upholstered materials and, if you want arms on your sofa, look for those which have thin wooden arms that follow the straight pattern mentioned above. Strangely enough, back in the 1960s and 1970s furniture that fulfilled this category was quite popular with the older generation of the time: a two-seater sofa and matching easy chairs, following these designs, was referred to as a cottage suite. The upholstery was usually a kind of hunting scene, or a scene taken from a Gainsborough print.

These retro designs of discount sofas for small spaces always had polished wooden arms and legs and quite high backs and were remarkably comfortable. A more modern example is the Elanor Sofa from Van Gogh Designs. This sofa is 77.5 inches wide and, rather than have bare wooden arms, the arms are covered in upholstery.  This design is, however, quite attractive and would not look out of place in either a traditional or a contemporary setting. This sofa comes in a wide variety of colours and textures, from Westwood Red to Microfibre Platinum, plus a number of other imaginatively named colours that include ivory, green, various shades of blues and browns – together with lots of textures from the corded look to a patterned texture. Matching cushions completes the look.

Futons Still Look Good

Naturally, if you aren’t a fan of futons, you probably wouldn’t consider one. However, the ubiquitous futon is still a remarkably good choice when it comes to discount sofas for small spaces. Futons fulfill all the criteria – straight, clean lines, no curves and no unnecessary drapery to hide the clarity of their design. The futon design is simple and straightforward with nothing to detract the attention from the rest of your small room. Futons, apart from looking marvelous in small rooms can also be converted into a spare bed for guests and if you want to change their look, you simply put on a different futon cover. The covers also tend to be machine washable which is wonderful if you have children or pets. You can even replace the futon cushion when too much wear becomes apparent.

How to Fix a Jammed Zipper on a Washable Futon Cover

One of the best features of futon furniture is the fact that the covers can be replaced or, depending on the style and fabric, can be washed.

Designed to withstand the vigor of machine washers, futon covers are available in an assortment of prints, solid colors and sizes. While these washable covers can be mixed and matched to add some variety to interior decor, the main feature is that they are easy to keep clean. Unlike regular upholstery that may require professional cleaning, the occasional mess created by kids or pets is no problem with machine washable covers.

Typically, a machine washable futon cover has two large zippers. The full cover looks like a large sheet made of denim or some other material, and has a seam in the middle. To install it, spread out the cover, align the mattress against the seam, and then fold the cover over so that the entire futon mattress is covered. There are two zippers, one on each corner. Zip up the cover and that is all there is to placing a cover on a futon mattress. When it is wash time, simply unzip the futon cover and pull it off the mattress.

Especially after a few spins in the wash machine, the zippers on your futon cover may occasionally get caught. Trying to get the zipper to work can be frustrating.

It might be tempting, but do not try to force the jammed zipper because yanking it too hard could inadvertently break the zipper tab off or destroy the teeth. After the teeth have been coated, try zipping and unzipping the unit a few times. This will usually make the zipper work more smoothly. If a candle is not available, a bar of hand soap works, although not quite as well.

If the problem is not ‘stickiness’ because of age, dirt or other factors, a string or fabric from the futon cover might be caught in the zipper unit. Carefully remove the caught material or string that is jamming the zipper. The inner fabric is typically what gets caught, so a pair of tweezers might come in handy in order to grasp the material or thread. Gently pull the inner lining, thread or other material that is caught in the unit away from the zipper. Light tugging will work, provided that the zipper tab is not yanked. Forcing the zipper tab up or down will make the problem worse. Depending on how embedded the futon fabric or thread is in the zipper unit, teeth might get separated when the material is removed. Gently push the zipper teeth back into place and the zipper should work. It is helpful to check the length of the zipper and push the lining away from the zipper to prevent future snags. Re-zip and the problem should be fixed.

Despite the fact that they do not cost much, machine washable futon covers are quite durable and their zipper units are sturdy. Nonetheless, owning a couple of spare futon covers can come in handy if the zipper breaks.

Have you considered making your own (or have someone make it for you if you are not so inclined).
They have many great stain resistant tapestry fabrics available and you can pick whatever suits you. It would be a simple project.

I am looking to decorate a studio apartment in minimalist style, and I like the traditional style Japanese futon, having slept on a futon, on the floor, for years. However a non-stored futon takes up way too much space in the studio.

I realize that there are futon “sofa beds”, but that really doesn’t go well with the style of decor I’d like to use here.

I really rather like the idea of storing futons in closets or in storage furniture during the day. I am aware that Japanese style futons are meant to be deployed over tatami matting, and NOT hardwood flooring.

My current idea is as follows: purchase 2-3 thin (3″-4″) all cotton futon mattresses that might be folded in 4s, stacked, and stored (possibly under a sideboard table during the day). At night, unfold and stack the futons together, essentially making the bottom thin futon a “tatami substitute” with the upper futon(s) making a sleeping surface.

Has anyone tried this, or something similar?

Any ideas on how well this would work?
I’m looking for comments more on the practicality of the storage strategy.

The thinner mattresses should be store-able this way, and I’m thinking stacking them this way should make them sleep-able.

I appreciate the viewpoint. I would point out that most futons are cased in a canvas/cotton like material, and not satin. I think the frictional coefficient of a queen sized mattress would be quite high. Cushions DO tend to fly apart, but their thickness/width and mass ratios are very different from futons, and they are often cased in slippery fabrics.

Traditional Japanese futons in tatami rooms are folded daily. Also, I’d note that relatively thin sofa “hide-a-bed” mattresses stay folded (and sat on!) for weeks to months at a time. I must admit they are not the most comfortable of sleeping platforms, but they are a single 3-4″ thickness.

As for the effort … yes, it IS a commitment that has to be taken seriously, or not done at all.

Where are you from? A mattress is a mattress. If it’s comfy, sleep on it. You might get tired of folding them and putting them away everyday though.

As they have become increasingly popular in the West, they have taken different forms. Outside of Japan, futons are generally taken off the floor and set on top of some type of adjustable frame. This allows them to be used in different combination to function as beds, sofas or chairs.

Their versatility is a major advantage that futons have over other pieces of furniture. As one futon can function in different roles, it means that those who have them do not need to buy as many pieces of furniture as they would otherwise need.

Their clean cut form, and stylish nature, means that they look the part in most rooms, though you will typically find them in living rooms and bedrooms. They are an ideal addition to spare / guests rooms too, as they can be simply unfolded into a ready made bed when visitors stay over.

Changing their form or moving them from one room to another is easy enough because they can easily be taken apart. This flexibility also makes them hassle free to clean, as a standard washing machine is big enough for the broken down parts to fit within.

Futon covers bring both increased versatility and cost savings. The covers can be changed easily and come in an endless variety of colors and designs. This makes it possible to change the look and feel of the room simply by changing a cover. The covers also protect the mattress from stains and other damage.

Futons can be filled with various materials depending on the use and preferences of the buyer. Cotton padding was the original material used for most futons, and it still has a wide following. Since it is soft and conforms to the user, it is very comfortable.

Cotton with wool and / or polyester added is an option, as is a foam filled futon. Being both lightweight and dense, foam offers a comfortable, firm and durable futon – these are probably the most popular ones.

Those who want something with a little more of a traditional feel are catered for too, as futons with innersprings are also available. These still have built in hinges for flexibility, so they are a perfect hybrid between a ‘normal’ sofa or bed and a futon.

With all of these benefits in mind, it is not hard to understand why futons are one of the most sought after pieces of furniture right now, especially when the fact that they cost less than comparable pieces of furniture is factored in too.
